After our 2024 event had to be postponed due to hurricane Helene, we are getting ready for our North Carolina premiere on October 11, 2025.

As a few participants have moved their entry to a different MammothMarch event or opted out to donate their entry fee to the NC Hurricane Relief Fund, we are re-opening our registration on December 6 at 9 am ET

We are thrilled to host our NC premiere at Lake James State Park, nestled in the foothills of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains!

Less than an hour northeast of Asheville and around 90 mins away from downtown Charlotte, our 20-mile hiking adventure features the picturesque Lake James and its magnificent trail system, including the Fonta Flora State Trail & the Wimba trail sections – all ready for you to conquer on October 11, 2025.

Distance: 20 miles in 8 hours
There is no timekeeping, there are no failures, we only recognize the incredible courage it takes to rise to our challenge. Every participant completing the distance will be awarded their finisher medal and considered a winner!

Starting time: You can choose from several time slots as early as 7:45 am with limited capacity when signing up. This ensures the most remote hiking experience as a maximum of 5 hikers will cross the starting line at the same time. The first ones will head out between 7:45 – 8:00 a.m. with the majority coming back in just about 8 hours. However, we will have our finish line open for the ones that need a bit more time.

Parking: Complimentary parking will be available on site.

Campground reservations: Can be made right here (6 months in advance).

Aid/refreshment stations: There are water stops and aid stations along the route (approximately positioned every 5-7 miles apart) providing toilets, food, and drinks for all participants. These refreshments are included in the cost of your ticket and vary between each station, offering water, energy drinks, electrolytes, fruits, cereal/protein bars, sandwiches and more.

Certificates: All finishers will receive their personalized certificate after crossing the finish line. For the ones who drop out, we will issue certificates stating the mileage covered.

Finisher medal/wall of fame: For all participants finishing MammothMarch.

Hiking Pass: MammothMarch Hiking Passes will be made available for all new participants. All participants from a previous edition or different MammothMarch events should bring their Hiking Pass to collect their 2024 stamps on site.

Route: The single-circuit loop covers 20 miles of all the beauty Lake James has to offer, including the Wimba trails, Fonta Flora State Trail, Mills Creek trail & many more. Steep, forested ridges covered with hardwoods, pines and hemlocks dominate the landscape while deer, flying squirrels, red and gray foxes, rabbits, muskrats and minks all reside at the Park to enjoy the Lake James’ large body of water. The final route will be made available around 2 weeks prior to the event.

Total elevation gain: Around 1,500 ft.
Terrain: A great mix of everything: Paved and unpaved hiking trails, dirt trails, gravel roads, forest floor

Please check out more details in our FAQ section or contact us contact@mammothmarch.com

The route will be made available approximately 2 weeks prior to the event. Please note that the route is preliminary and may be adjusted due to weather issues, official directives and/or organizational matters. The route will be marked 1-2 days prior to event day. Should we notice parts of the route being inaccessible, extremely wet/muddy we will adapt it to local conditions at short notice.
